The school experience in this semester is being a teacher assistant in a public school. I found so many interesting things in SMAN 12. At first, I thought that being teacher assistant will be hard since this is my first time to assisting a teacher of national plus public school and I became so nervous. I just thought to do my best to help my master teacher. I also thought that maybe from this assisting I can know how the real teaching in class with some method is. For these two weeks I will get more information, knowledge and experience from the school.
During the first and second week of our school experience my master teacher had no material to teach in class because this week for class XI only has examination and drama performance. So, he just told us to finish our lesson plan for next week teaching performance. He also asked us to make rubric for drama performance, and then he compared with his own style of rubric after we finish discussed about what rubric is (he never use rubric before in assessing the students). After we discussed about the rubric and then my group finished our rubric, in the end he still use his own style of rubric (with five classification which is usually rubric has 4 classification).
Overall, the first week observation is running well even though my group couldn’t see how learning and teaching process in class. I hope the second week is more interesting and challenging than the first week because I have to teach the class. I will do my best to teach the class, make the class actively and lively than my master teacher ever did. Then, the second week had come. “This is the time!” that was the word which came out of my mind when second week of school experience come. Yes, that was the time to do team teaching. I was so nervous because have to teach in class, more nervous because that was the first time to teach in class. There are so many plans that came out of my mind to prepare everything in class. I thought how to handled the students if they do not pay attention or how to raise my volume of voice if they noisy and so on.
Actually, the way my master teacher seems a bit boring for the students. I asked some students about his teaching ways and compare to my team teaching ways, then almost of them saidthat the way he taught them wasn’t really special different from us. Then, I know that my master teacher might be doesn’t have any interesting ways or methods in teaching. From my master teacher lesson plan I also found that there are some activities in class that do not appropriate in class. For example he asked the each student to do library research about the lesson on that day and make their own notes based on their understanding about the lesson. Then I asked him how about the result of their research? Then he answered that usually in the end of the material chapter, he asked the students to submit their note and he will mark it. I think better if he explains the material directly than he asked the students to do that. I think that the students maybe can cheat from the others without searching and understanding by themselves. I think my master teacher didn’t facilitate his students well as a teacher.
If I were the teacher I will make my class more interesting and make the students more active by doing the useful activities. I’m not saying that my master teacher’s way of teaching is bad, but I will do better in the future as a teacher to make my students better too. I will improve their skills as long as I improve my way of teaching too. I will give the materials to the students by doing some useful way, for example the students analyze the problem based on learning by themselves not only by group discussions. If they find the difficulties, I will facilitate them and do personal approaches to make them more understand the lesson. That’s what the students need from us as a teacher.
